TAG HEUER & PORSCHE

Legendary Brands

In a tale of two legendary brands, Swiss visionary Edouard Heuer and German mastermind Ferdinand Porsche set out on separate journeys, bound by a shared passion for innovation and style. Heuer, a young horologist, kick-started his brand by revolutionising the winding system with the keyless crown-operated mechanism in 1869. His pursuit of precision led to the invention of the oscillating pin for stopwatches, marking the beginning of TAG Heuer's association with motorsport.

Meanwhile, Ferdinand Porsche's genius in the automobile industry paved the way for the iconic Porsche 356 in 1948, capturing the hearts of car enthusiasts and racers alike. The two brands' destinies converged in the heart-stopping La Carrera Panamericana race, known for its danger and allure (explored in an earlier blog here). It was here that Jack Heuer, the great-grandson of Edouard Heuer, found inspiration and set out to create a watch that would embody the speed and style of legendary racers—the Heuer Carrera driver's chronograph was born in 1963.

This same year, Porsche introduced the Porsche 911, which would eventually be named Carrera in homage to the iconic race. The charismatic Steve McQueen, sporting a Heuer Monaco watch, drove a Porsche 917 in the film Le Mans, captivating audiences worldwide and catapulting both brands to household names associated with style and coolness.

The 1980s brought TAG Heuer and Porsche closer than ever, with TAG supplying engines to Formula 1 cars and Porsche using TAG-Turbo engines. The collaboration continued with F1 legend Mika Häkkinen's triumph in the Porsche Supercup, exuding a synergy of class and style.

Navigating into the new millennium, both brands gracefully maintained their legacies, forming authentic and thoughtful partnerships. TAG Heuer collaborated with George Bamford and Fragment Design, while Porsche partnered with Aimé Leon Dore and Daniel Arsham to further solidify their relevance in contemporary culture. In 2019, TAG Heuer and Porsche united formally as the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, venturing into the future of racing with a pioneering spirit. The recent release of the TAG Heuer and Porsche Carrera Chronograph marks the first collaborative product, a testament to their dedication to innovation and style.

As the journey continues, TAG Heuer and Porsche are poised to redefine the landscape of motorsport and fashion, perpetually dressing the well-dressed with their timeless creations. With passion and vision as their fuel, the TAG Heuer and Porsche alliance promises a thrilling ride ahead, setting the pace for innovation and style in the world of horology and beyond.

TAG Heuer Calibre Heuer 02

TAG Heuer's Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement is a true marvel of watchmaking, boasting 168 finely crafted components that work in harmony to deliver precision and performance. Operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), this mechanical masterpiece offers five key benefits that set it apart from its predecessors. First and foremost, the Calibre Heuer 02 showcases an impressive power reserve of 80 hours, a substantial increase of 30 hours compared to the earlier Calibre Heuer 01. This extended power reserve ensures that the watch will keep ticking even after days of non-use, providing convenience and ease for the wearer.

One of the notable enhancements in this movement is its thinner profile, measuring just 6.95 mm in thickness compared to the Heuer 01's 7.30 mm. This reduction in thickness allows for a slimmer case design, delivering improved comfort and a sleeker overall appearance on the wrist. The implementation of a vertical clutch in the Calibre Heuer 02 significantly improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions, as well as the smooth running of the chronograph second hand. Thanks to this innovation, there is no loss of time when utilising the chronograph function, ensuring accurate and seamless timekeeping during its use.

Adding to its technical prowess, the Calibre Heuer 02 is equipped with a column wheel, a horological feature that provides superior accuracy and precise functionality. This results in smooth and effortless impulse when operating the pushers, elevating the overall user experience. Lastly, the movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour, guaranteeing remarkable precision and stability. This high-frequency movement ensures that the watch keeps time with utmost accuracy, reflecting TAG Heuer's commitment to exceptional timekeeping performance.

Not only does the Calibre Heuer 02 excel in its mechanical prowess, but it also pays homage to the vintage Carrera design with a tri-compax layout, reminiscent of the iconic TAG Heuer Carrera models from the 1960s. The larger subdials and prominent display between them enhance legibility, making it easy for wearers to read the time at a glance. Furthermore, the innovative design of the Heuer 02 movement allows for the possibility of adding extensions to its functionality, demonstrating TAG Heuer's commitment to continuous improvement and adaptability.
